Rezumat: Laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (LPAS) has become a powerful technique to study concentrations of gases at the part per billion or even part per trillion levels.
Based on a general schematic, the principles and the main components of LPAS are described together with the laser source and the resonant photoacoustic cell. Other aspects of a functional photoacoustic instrument, such as the gas handling system and data acquisition and processing, are also outlined. As a typical application, we present the ethylene gas changes at different time intervals in the exhaled breath composition of electronic cigarette smokers and traditional cigarette smokers, before and after the consecutive exposures to cigarettes.
The study revealed that the ethylene level (in the electronic cigarette smoker’s case) was found to be in smaller concentrations (compared with traditional cigarette smoker’s case) and that electronic cigarettes may provide an alternative to traditional cigarette smoking.
